IDIOPATHIC ENDOLYMPHATIC HYDROPS
This is a disorder that affects the inner ear and is also known as a Meniere’s Disease. Idiopathic means that the cause of this disorder is unknown. It is general though to be caused by an increase in the inner ears pressure.
Idiopathic endolymphatic hydrops can be divided into three areas:
- Secondary endolymphatic hydrops (SEH)
- Delayed endolymphatic hydrops (DEH)
- Traumatic endolymphatic hydrops (TEH)
Symptoms of Meniere’s Disease
- Tinnitus
- Vertigo
- Hearing Loss
- A feeling as if the ears are blocked or full
Causes of Idiopathic Endolymphatic Hydrops
- The cause of Idiopathic Endolymphatic Hydrops is not known.
- The cause of secondary end lymphatic hydrops is the result of a perilymph fistula. A perilymph fistula is a small hole in the inner ear and may result in a leak of inner ear fluids.
- The cause of delayed endolymphatic hydrops is usually a result of an earlier traumatic event occurring in ones life such as disease, surgery or head trauma.
- The cause of traumatic endolymphatic hydrops is usually associated with a history of trauma such as a blow to the head, barotraumas or even previous ear operations.
Treatment for idiopathic endolymphatic hydrops
- Low Salt diet and try avoiding foods high in MSG and artificial flavorings
- Anti – Nausea foods should be eaten. Ginger is an important food source which helps with feelings of nausea and queasiness.
- Diuretics to help lessen water content in the body.
- Anti-Vertigo drugs and medications
