IS TINNITUS OBJECTIVE OR SUBJECTIVE

Tinnitus is a condition where an individual hears a noise that is created inside their ears rather than a noise that comes from and is created in the outside environment. These sounds can be heard as a ringing, buzzing, hissing, humming or even a whistling noise in one or both ears.

What is objective tinnitus?

Objective tinnitus occurs when another person, such as your doctor, can also hear the noise in the affected person’s ear whilst using a stethoscope.

What is subjective tinnitus?

Subjective tinnitus occurs when only the person who is affected can hear the sound in their ears. This type of tinnitus can also be regarded as a psychological problem.

Who is more prone to developing tinnitus?

  • Individuals working in noisy surroundings
  • Old age makes one more susceptible to developing this condition
  • Hardening of the arterially walls can make one more susceptible to developing tinnitus.

Tinnitus can affect both the young and the old and is not limited to the above.

Who Gets Tinnitus?

Tinnitus may affect anyone. However, it is more common with increasing age. People who are prone to hardening of the arteries are at greater risk for tinnitus than the general population. Causes

  • Defects regarding the structure of the inner ear.
  • Vascular anomalies
  • Problems with the Eustachian tube.


The causes are not well understood but researches think that:

  • Ear infections
  • Loud noises
  • Meniere's Disease
  • Certain medications
  • Head injury
  • Hearing loss (tinnitus is frequently associated with hearing loss)
  • Impacted ear wax
  • Ear tumors
  • Psychological tinnitus

And many other possibilities can cause subjective tinnitus.

Treatment


Treatment is aimed at the causes of objective tinnitus.

  • Removing tumors
  • Treating related conditions such as circulatory problems and Meniere's Disease.
  • Surgery to correct defects of the inner ear and vascular abnormalities (if possible)
  • Treat Eustachian tube problems.


The treatment is aimed at treating the underlying cause of the tinnitus problem:

  • Hearing aids are given to those with hearing loss
